Erwin Wetzel, the Director General of the EVA, was invited as a guest speaker at the Vending Trade Festival (Vendtra) Conference which took place on 17 February and which was part of the digital trade show that was organised by the vending magazine Vending Report on 17 & 18 February.

Being the first speaker of the day, he gave a thorough overview about the vending & OCS market situation in 2021, presented post-covid consumer trends and showed opportunities for operators to gain new clients as well as businesses. The objective of that event being to help operators to understand where the industry is going, three panel sessions with industry experts were organised covering topics such as market trends, innovations in ingredients and payments.

In the panel discussion about market trends following questions were addressed: how will the OCS business adapt to the structural home office? When does the installation of a micromarket make sense? Are coffee towers/coffee corners and outdoor vending machines real alternatives to target new clients and sites? Regarding ingredients, it came out of the discussion that prices will continue to rise and that operators will need to pass on this increase to the final consumer. Furthermore new business models need to be developed to compensate the reduction in consumption in offices. Finally, the representatives from the companies offering payment systems explained that the demand for contactless increased significantly and that vending machines need to be equipped with cashless systems in order to satisfy consumer demand.

The conference finished with an insightful presentation of Holger Preibisch, Director General of the German Coffee Association, who gave an update about the latest trends of coffee consumption in Germany.

It must be said that this kind of digital events are a good way to catch up with colleagues and to exchange knowledge in between the physical events and we thank the Vending Report for this opportunity.
